Helping Men Recover curriculum addresses what is often missing in prevailing treatment modes: a clear understanding of the impact of male socialization on the recovery process, a consideration of the relational needs of men, and a focus on the issues of abuse and trauma. Existing models often provide little direction in helping men to establish a healthy sense of self outside of stereotypical masculine scripts. In contrast, this is one of the primary goals of Helping Men Recover. It is suitable for men, transmen, and nonbinary people who have a masculine experience of the world.

It's often used with people in the criminal justice system who have a history of substance abuse. MRT's goal is to prevent drug-related crimes from being re-offended.
MRT is based on Erikson's Theory of Personality Development and Kohlberg's Theory of Moral Reasoning. It uses cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to help people make better decisions for themselves and others, and to promote a positive self-identity.
