What Peer-Led Recovery Looks Like in Aurora & Denver

When someone is struggling with substance use or a behavioral health challenge, clinical care is important — but it's rarely enough on its own. What often makes the difference is connection: being seen, heard, and supported by someone who has walked the same road.

That's the foundation of peer-led recovery. And it's at the heart of everything we do at The Don't Look Back Center in Aurora, Colorado.

What Does "Peer-Led" Actually Mean?

Peer-led recovery means that the people guiding your healing journey have their own lived experience with addiction, mental health challenges, trauma, or incarceration. They're not just trained professionals — they're people who have been where you are and found a way through.

At DLBC, many of our staff members, coaches, and group facilitators are themselves in long-term recovery. They bring certifications and credentials alongside personal understanding — a combination that creates trust in ways that traditional clinical settings often can't replicate.

Why Peer Support Works

Research consistently shows that peer support improves outcomes in behavioral health and substance use recovery. Here's why:

Shared experience builds trust. When someone tells you "I've been there," and you know they mean it, it changes the dynamic. You're more likely to open up, stay engaged, and believe that recovery is actually possible for you.

Peers model what recovery looks like. Seeing someone who has navigated the same challenges — and is now thriving — is one of the most powerful motivators in recovery. It makes the abstract feel real.

Peer support reduces shame. Shame is one of the biggest barriers to seeking help. Peer-led environments tend to be less judgmental and more affirming, which helps people stay engaged in their recovery.

Continuity of care. Peer support workers often stay connected with clients over time, providing consistent encouragement and accountability that extends beyond formal treatment sessions.

Peer-Led Programs at DLBC in Aurora

Our programming in Aurora is built around peer support at every level. Here's a look at some of the groups and services we offer:

Recovery Groups for Men and Women

We offer separate peer-led recovery groups for men and women, creating spaces where participants can speak openly about their experiences without judgment.

Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT)

MRT is an evidence-based cognitive behavioral program that helps individuals in recovery develop moral reasoning, empathy, and decision-making skills. Our facilitators bring both training and lived experience to these sessions.

H.E.R. / H.E.A.T. Groups

These groups are designed specifically for women, offering healing, empowerment, and accountability in a peer-centered environment.

T.O.P. — Transgender Outreach Program

Our T.O.P. Coordinator, Tia Garrett, provides affirming, trauma-informed peer support for transgender individuals navigating recovery and community reintegration. This is one of the few programs of its kind in the Aurora and Denver area.

Re-Entry and Forensic Peer Support

For individuals transitioning from incarceration, our Re-Entry and Forensic Peer Specialist provides guidance, advocacy, and connection to recovery services — drawing on personal experience with the criminal justice system.

RAHAB Mommy & Me

This program offers peer-led support and affordable transitional housing for mothers and children after sober living — addressing one of the most underserved populations in the Denver metro recovery community.

Peer Support in the Context of Wraparound Care

At DLBC, peer support doesn't exist in isolation. It's woven into a broader system of wraparound care that includes case management, life skills training, workforce development, DUI education, and housing support.

This integrated approach recognizes that recovery is about more than staying sober — it's about rebuilding a life. And that requires support at every level: emotional, practical, and social.
