What to Expect During Your First Behavioral Health or Addiction Treatment Visit
Taking the first step toward help for addiction, substance use, mental health, or emotional challenges can feel overwhelming. You may be wondering what questions will be asked, whether you will be judged, or if you are ready to talk about everything you have experienced.
At The Don't Look Back Center, we understand that recovery begins differently for everyone. Your first visit is an opportunity for us to get to know you, understand what you need, and begin building a plan that supports your recovery, health, and future.
Here is what you can generally expect:
A Safe, Welcoming Conversation
You do not have to tell your entire story during your first visit. We will meet you where you are and give you time to become comfortable with the process.
Understanding Your Substance Use and Recovery Needs
Your clinician may ask about alcohol or drug use, previous treatment or recovery experiences, triggers, cravings, mental health, trauma, relationships, housing, employment, and other areas that may be affecting your well-being.
Confidentiality and Your Rights
We will explain confidentiality, privacy, your rights as a participant, and any circumstances in which information may need to be shared.
Talking About Your Goals
Recovery is personal. Your goals may include reducing or stopping substance use, preventing relapse, improving your mental health, rebuilding relationships, finding stable housing or employment, or successfully navigating probation, parole, or reentry.
Creating a Treatment Plan Together
Your clinician will work with you to identify your strengths, needs, and goals and determine which behavioral health and recovery services may be appropriate.
Asking Questions
This is your opportunity to ask questions about treatment, groups, peer support, recovery services, expectations, or anything else that will help you feel informed and comfortable.
Your first visit is not about judgment or having all the answers. It is the beginning of a relationship focused on helping you move toward greater stability, wellness, and recovery.
At The Don't Look Back Center, we believe people deserve the opportunity to heal, recover, and build a life they are proud of.
You don't have to have everything figured out before asking for help. You just have to be willing to take that first step.
